Product Review: Ground Tuna Meat from Joong Boo Market
The other day, I finally got around to visiting Joong Boo Market, a Korean products store here in Chicago. I’d been there before, but this was my first time scoping it out to see if they had any good fish for sushi. One thing that caught my eye was ground tuna meat. Ground tuna is fantastic for spicy tuna rolls, and would save me a lot of time and money compared to using a solid piece of tuna, which is far more expensive than this minced up tuna. This is how it came packaged:
The instructions said to defrost it by taking it out of the vacuum packaging and putting it in the fridge. Pretty standard. I used a freezer bag and defrosted it. Afterward, I tried a bit of it. Definitely edible raw, just a bit bland.
I mixed in some chili oil, a bit of mayo, and brand of roasted chili mix in oil that I’m trying out, and I used it to make some inside-out spicy tuna rolls. This is what it looked like before I rolled it up.
And these are the finished and cut up rolls
Overall the taste was fine. It wasn’t the best. However, I think that had less to do with the tuna and more to do with the crispy chili oil stuff. I think more conventional spicy mayo would have been perfect. So here’s my final verdict:
Affordability - Is it good value for what you get? 5/5
Freshness - Is it safe to eat? 5/5
Flavor - Is it delicious? 3/5
Appearance - Does it look delicious in sushi? 5/5
I’ll definitely buy this again, especially if I’m planning on making sushi for a bunch of people!
