Riviera Seafood Co
Highlight: They always have discounts and deals going on, and I’ve gotten better quality, fresher tasting fish from them than Catalina OP. It’s also perfect for anyone looking to buy smaller more manageable portions of fish to defrost over time. If you’re only feeding yourself, it’s perfect
Downside: I prefer buying bigger pieces of fish because when I make it, I’m usually having people over. They also for some reason have a yellowtail portion which is the entire fish but no yellowtail loin like all the other sites here? They also have limited options compared to Catalina OP.
MPSgroceries.com
Highlight: If you’re in Chicago, you get free delivery if your order exceeds 50 dollars. Very simple to use, and you don’t get fatigued by too many options. Their salmon is also the cheapest out of all of the fish ordering services, while still managing to be better than at a lot of sushi restaurants I’ve been to around here. I know I said to use Riviera if you’re a newbie, but if you’re in Chicago, go with MPS Groceries instead.
Downside: I didn’t like their variety compared to the other websites, and the website just felt dead? They never seem to update it, they never do special deals. Kind of a barebones experience. Also, out of all these services, I found their fish to be the least consistently tasty overall. Still good, especially if one of the others are out of something I want, like tuna.
Catalina OP
Highlight: Affordable and they have a lot of different sushi fish options!
Downside: I find some of their options kind of limited.
MyKosherFish.com
Highlight: If you keep strict kosher, this is the website for you. All their fish is either OU or CRC certified.
Downside: Serious lack of variety, and it doesn’t just have to do with being limited only to kosher fish. You won’t find bluefin tuna, for example (though weirdly, you will find toro).
Browne Trading Co.
Highlight: This is my subjective opinion, but the salmon I ordered from them was the freshest I’ve ever had. Also, you can find Hokkaido Scallops, which you won’t find on most of these other services. Their bluefin tuna is also sustainably caught.
Downside: Their portions are pretty big, and they don’t offer smaller cuts for most of their fish. The prices is fair, but when you’re ordering 3.5 lbs of salmon, unless you have a bunch of people over, you might not get through it all before it becomes inadvisable to eat raw.
Wagyuman
Highlight: Their Otoro is a huge fucking saku block, and you can also easily order A5 Wagyu, which they’re careful about sourcing.
Downside: This website is better suited for ordering meat, but if you want to one-stop-shop it, then order some yellowtail and bluefin tuna from them also in addition to your delicious wagyu meat.
These were the services I’ve used, but there’s plenty more out there.
